Wood patio umbrellas are a significant investment. A quality one, with a solid hardwood pole and proper canvas canopy, can run $1,500 to $3,000 or more. When the canopy fades or tears, the instinct is to replace the whole thing.
That’s usually the wrong call.
When the frame is sound, replace the canopy
A well-made wood frame lasts decades. UV and weathering damage the canopy long before they damage hardwood. If the frame is structurally intact, with no cracked joints, no broken ribs and a working mechanism, a canopy replacement is almost always the right answer.
Cost comparison:
- New premium umbrella: $1,500 – $3,000+
- Custom canopy replacement: typically $300 – $600 depending on size and fabric
The canopy is the part that’s worn out. Replace the canopy, keep the frame.
What we need to make a replacement canopy
Every canopy is cut and sewn to fit the specific frame. We need:
- The number of panels (count the ribs, each rib creates one seam)
- The diameter of the canopy (measure tip to tip)
- The pole diameter at the top where the canopy mounts
- Photos of the existing canopy, top and underside
If you can bring the frame in, we can measure it directly. Otherwise, photos and measurements are usually enough to quote.
Fabric options for replacement canopies
We use outdoor acrylic canvas (Planasol, Sunbrella and similar) for replacement canopies. These are the same fabrics used on commercial shade structures: UV-stable, water-repellent, and built to handle Auckland summers.
Colours are available in a wide range. If you’re replacing a faded canopy, this is a good opportunity to update the colour.
Wooden frame repairs
If the umbrella has been blown over in a storm, the damage is usually broken arms or ribs and torn cloth at the rib pockets. Both are repairable. We repair wooden umbrella frames, restitch the cloth and can re-stain the frame so it looks close to new. This applies to Devon, Konturest and most overseas-made models.
What we don’t repair is metal mechanisms. If a metal or cantilever umbrella’s operating mechanism has failed, that’s a different problem, and it may be better to look at a new umbrella.
